About Dr. Katie Morel
I am a New York State-licensed clinical psychologist (#023263) with over ten years of experience treating children, pre-teens, teenagers, young adults and adults.
My therapeutic approach is collaborative, dynamic, and compassionate. I treat every patient as a unique individual, and take a goal-oriented approach to ensure that our time is spent making meaningful progress towards desired outcomes.
I graduated from Stanford University with Honors in Psychology and received my doctorate from Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus. I also hold a Masters of Science in Education from Lehman College and was a Teach For America Corps Member and Corps Member Advisor.
I received pre- and post-doctoral training at Mount Sinai and Mount Sinai St. Luke’s, New York City Children’s Center - Bronx Campus, Jewish Child Care Association - Foster Home Division, and Long Island University Brooklyn Campus Psychological Services Center. I am currently on faculty at Mount Sinai and Mount Sinai Morningside Hospitals, where I actively supervise pre- and post-doctoral clinicians.
The core of my practice revolves around two major themes: the reality that starting, growing and managing a family can present a multitude of challenges, and the fact that adolescence and young adulthood, along with the transitions therein, can be a very trying time for pre-teens, teens, college-aged students and recent graduates.
I believe that therapy can help both individuals and families develop strategies to not only cope with difficulties, but also learn to thrive. My expertise with issues such as attachment, depression, anxiety, trauma, and interpersonal relationships enables my clients to identify underlying patterns, navigate transitions, and craft more satisfying experiences.
In addition to general psychotherapy, I specialize in three major areas:
Adolescence - Supporting social, emotional and cognitive development through middle school, high school and college.
Life Transitions - Processing shifts in identity, family dynamics, and interpersonal relationships due to personal or professional changes.
Perinatal Mental Health - Navigating pregnancy, infertility, perinatal mood/anxiety disorders, perinatal or infant loss, and the challenges of early parenthood.
I practice psychodynamically, integrating techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and family systems. My pre-doctoral experience as a Middle School Dean affords me particular expertise with respect to issues faced by school-age children.
I believe that a strong therapeutic relationship between patient and therapist is fundamental to the process of successful therapy. I work to create a warm, empathic environment that feels safe and free of judgment.
